The Volt is basically a hybrid car with a ton of battery storage. It can run up to 40 miles on battery power alone, and you just plug it in at night to recharge it, so no more gasoline if you drive less than 40 miles per day.
The battery technology is not ready yet, but it looks to me like a very good concept that could be a top-selling production vehicle in a few years.
